In September, 1877, Father McGolrick left for an extended vacation in Europe, the objective point being his birth-place, Borrisokane, in County Tipperary, Ireland, where he was born on May 1, 1841. He was accompanied by four students whom he placed in the preparatory seminary at Meximieux in France to study the classics and test their vocation to the priesthood. On their arrival at night-fall they were met by Reverend Joseph Guillot, a subdeacon, and a member of the teaching staff, who mistook the youthful-looking priest for a last-minute addition to the group of students for whom they had been asked to prepare. They were given
the customary evening

he found one of them sitting on a bed, Father McGolrick, saying his breviary! A frank apology was offered and accepted in Latin - the only language common to both - and Father McGolrick was ceremoniously escorted to the chapel to say Mass, and thereafter he occupied the Bishop's room in the institution. Six years afterwards, 1883, when Father Guillot came to the Diocese of St. Paul he met Father McGolrick who reminded him of the incident at Meximieux and they had a hearty laugh over it. What became of the boys? One of them, Edward McKay of DeGraff, died the following year 1878 and was buried at Meximieux; another, Edward Fallon of St. Paul, returned home at the end of his classical course 1878?.

St Lucas Guatemala 48 years pastoring there following in the tradition of father Bentancur. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2L3lCVXIXc What a life well-lived: Fr. Gregory Schaffer goes home to God; by Tom Gallagher In 2010, I wrote a story about the heroic priestly service of Fr. Stanley Rother, who spent his life -- literally --on behalf of the Guatemalan people in a mission called Santiago Atitlán. His fellow missionary priest, Fr. Gregory Schaffer, was serving nearby San Lucas Toliman Mission. I interviewed Fr. Schaffer for the story. As the violence escalated in Guatemala, Fr. Schaffer told me that he warned Fr. Stan: "They're on the streets to get you." In the early hours of July 28, 1981, Rother was attacked in the rectory by three men in ski masks, shot and killed. Rother's knuckles were rubbed raw by the fight. In 2007, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City opened the cause for canonization for Fr. Stanley Rother, the first for a person from Oklahoma to be considered for sainthood. Now we learn that his good friend, Fr. Gregory Schaffer, died on May 24 at the age of 78 after a battle with lymphoma. Perhaps in time, the New Ulm, Minn., diocese will open up a cause for canonization for Fr. Gregory Schaffer, one of the great priests of our time. May he rest in God's peace. The Star Tribune reports: Gregory Schaffer was born in St. Paul, studied at St. Paul Seminary and was ordained as a Catholic priest for the Diocese of New Ulm. But he found his true calling in Guatemala. He hadn't anticipated his appointment as a diocesan missionary there in 1963. Yet he stayed for more than four decades, leading project after project to better the lives of the Guatemalan people he loved. Schaffer, whose caring and charisma drew thousands of Minnesota volunteers to San Lucas Toliman, died May 24 of lymphoma. He was 78. In 1963, he was assigned to the mission in San Lucas Toliman, founded by a Franciscan order in the late 16th century. His parents visited in 1965, Wiggins said. "When they came home, Dad said, 'He's never going to come back.'" Over his decades there, Schaffer oversaw "an establishment which is mind-boggling," according to a St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity newsletter noting Schaffer's distinguished alumni award. "A parish church building, a school, a hospital, a program of agricultural education, a relentless drive for social justice implemented among the rural poor." Jacob Cunningham met Schaffer as a 20-year-old St. Thomas student in Guatemala for a month. "I think what he said loud and clear over and over again, was that 'It's important that you're here,'" said Cunningham, who runs a University of St. Thomas program called VISION, which organizes mission trips for students. "'However, approach this with a lot of humility, recognizing the dignity and beauty of the people.' That created the possibility in San Lucas for a kid like me from Minnesota to have a real relationship with the mission and the people." In a way, Father Greg Schaffer, 53, was set up from the beginning to serve as a missionary priest in Latin America. But perhaps not in Venezuela. Following in namesake’s footsteps led Minnesota priest to his own Latin American mission The Catholic Spirit | August 22, 2018 The St. Paul native was named after his priest-uncle, Father Gregory Schaffer, who established the Diocese of New Ulm’s mission in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. He grew up listening to his uncle’s stories whenever he came home. He made his first trip to San Lucas in the seventh grade and couldn’t wait to go back. He recalls that at some point he met martyr-to-be, Blessed Stanley Rother, who served a nearby parish. After graduating from St. Bernard’s High School in St. Paul in 1984, he entered St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul and joined the U.S. Army Reserve to pay for college. During a leave of absence from the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in St. Paul, the future priest spent two years with his uncle at the Guatemala mission from 1989 to 1991. Father Schaffer said he experienced profound peace in the midst of what was effectively a war zone. Seeing how his uncle was able to bring hope to people in such conditions gave him an image of priestly life that proved inspiring. “That really helped solidify my vision of priesthood,” said Father Schaffer, who returned to SPS and was ordained in 1994. Although Father Schaffer was prepared to accept whatever assignment he’d receive as an archdiocesan priest, his hope was that he’d be able to serve in Latin America — specifically Guatemala. But after serving for three years at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Maplewood, he was asked to serve at the archdiocesan mission in Venezuela. “Without skipping a beat, I said I’d like to go to Guatemala,” he recalls. “[The bishop] told me, ‘I know you do, but you can’t.’ And that was that.” Father Schaffer accepted the Venezuela assignment, but not without another attempt at keeping his Guatemala dream alive. When classmate Paul McGee expressed interest in serving in Venezuela, Father Schaffer went to Archbishop Harry Flynn and asked that his classmate go in his place. Instead, Archbishop Flynn sent them both. Father Schaffer has been serving in Ciudad Guayana ever since. In Venezuela, Father Schaffer said he has had to learn to rely both on God and the people around him. “To really connect with the people and serve, you have to depend on them and listen to them,” he said. Father Schaffer’s time in Venezuela has made him grateful for his seminary preparation, as it’s helped him work through questions that have come up in his ministry, like how to appropriately incorporate local music into the liturgy. Serving in Venezuela has also made him appreciate spiritual truths that often go unheeded in modern America — such as the dangers of witchcraft and voodoo, which are far more prevalent realities in South America. “It’s nothing to fool around with,” he said of such practices, which are part of the Santeria religion prevalent in Latin America. Father Schaffer has served as pastor of Jesucristo Resucitado since 2000, but he recently picked up an additional assignment: vicar general of the Diocese of Ciudad Guyana. He said it’s a humbling and “surreal” experience, which included representing the diocese at last year’s meeting of Venezuela bishops. He found that talking about baseball was an easy way to make connections with the bishops, given the success of Venezuelan players like Johann Santana and Carlos Silva, both of whom once played for the Minnesota Twins. Now in his 21st year of ministry in Ciudad Guayana, the Minnesota priest admits that he never thought he’d be in Venezuela this long. But after serving as vicar general and seeing the difficulties facing local priests, he said he can’t envision leaving now. “It’d be really hard to go back to a nice, comfortable situation in the archdiocese, knowing the sacrifices the other priests are making here,” he said, adding that he feels obligated to help generous people back in Minnesota make a difference in Venezuela. “I have to take advantage of that while I’m able to.” And if Father Schaffer is going to match his uncle’s feat of serving 48 years in the mission, he’ll need to continue to draw on the original inspiration he encountered in San Lucas all those years ago. “It’s a humbling experience,” he said. “Being an
instrument of God’s grace
and love in the midst of all the struggles
makes all the difference in the
world.”

Father Fleming says that one of the best compliments that he has ever received came from a soldier who had just attended Mass shirtless because of the heat. Afterward, the soldier approached Father Fleming and said, “Chappy, you sure got your [expletive] in a sandbox today.” In recognition of his military service he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Vietnam Service Medal. In 1984, Chaplain Fleming was promoted to the rank of Colonel, giving him more opportunities to serve his soldiers and their families. During his Army years, wherever Fr. Martin was stationed, he opened his home to brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. He also showed up for family celebrations back home, wherever on earth he happened to be. “He never lost his Irish sense of humor,” said Patricia Basel, 83, who first met Father Fleming in 1965 while she was teaching children at a military base in Fairbanks, Alaska, where Father Fleming was serving as chaplain. “He would use it sometime if there was a discussion going on and if things were not going well. He would say something that everybody laughed at.” < colonel Fr Martin at 91 Reverend

Leo Clifford, OFM, was born March 21, 1922 in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, and was baptized Diarmuid Brendan. In 1954, Fr. Leo received permission to come to the United States. For the next 50 years, he devoted himself to preaching, chiefly retreats and days of recollection for priests and religious. Over the years, he was based at St. Francis of Assisi Friary, New York City, St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., and then, from 1967 to 2003, at St. Stephen of Hungary Friary, New York City, where he became a familiar figure, helping out in the parish on weekends when he was not on the road. Fr. Leo maintained his extensive European connections. In 1962, he was asked to serve as English-language secretary to Cardinal Leo Suenens of Malines-Brussels at the Second Vatican Council. After a sabbatical year in 1993, Fr. Leo formally transferred from the Franciscan Province of Ireland to Holy Name Province. Although he began to slow down his traveling in the 1990s, videos of his talks continued to be broadcast daily on the EWTN television network. In 2003, he retired to St. Anthony Residence in Boston, but continued to serve as a confessor at St. Anthony Shrine, where he had a sizeable following. In 2010, he transferred first to St. Anthony Friary, Butler, N.J., and then to Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J. He died there on Feb. 16, 2012. Fr. Leo was 89 years old, a professed friar for 69 years and a priest for 65 years. Please pray for his mother with alzheimers. A Holy and delightful Catholic priest and brilliant. H.M. Father Greg Welch, retired; presiding at Basilica of St Mary Minneapolis FATHER AMBROSE MAHON R.I.,P. 2016 Father Mahon describes the people who attend noon Mass on Mondays as “good people,” often business people who are downtown and come over on their lunch break. He says The Basilica is just the kind of parish that is needed downtown and is set up well to minister to Catholics who want to keep faith a part of daily life. Originally from Carver County, one of Father Mahon’s early assignments after ordination was to serve as associate pastor at St. Patrick’s in Edina. The other associate pastor at the time was Father John Bauer. From there, Father Mahon served at Nativity of Our Lord in St. Paul before returning to St. Patrick’s, where he then served as pastor for 28 years. On Christmas Eve this past year, Father Mahon invited someone who had been away from the church for years to attend the 4:00 P.M. Mass at The Basilica. After Mass, this person told Father Mahon that he felt like he was coming home: the music, the liturgy, and the decorations were beautiful, and the sermon felt like it was meant for him. Father Mahon is very
happy in what he is doing and
hopes that he can continue
to help people through the Eucharist.

SKRYPEK
at
the
Basilica
of St

retired;
Father Skrypek celebrates the Thursday 7:00 A.M. Mass. Throughout his career, he has been connected with The Basilica. In 1969, Father Skrypek was a deacon at The Basilica prior to his ordination as a priest in 1970. He then was assigned to St. Columba in St. Paul before returning to The Basilica as an associate pastor. He served as interim administrator at The Basilica between Monsignor Berntson and Father Wagner before becoming a chaplain at the Hennepin County jail and the prison in Stillwater (20 years). When Father Skrypek was assigned to live at The Basilica, he brought his things on the Saturday before the official Tuesday move-in day. Because his room wasn’t yet ready, he stored his clothes in what was then the library. His clothes were discovered by staff members who mistakenly thought they were intended for donation and gave them away. Father Skrypek said that for the next few years he kept an eye out for his clothes walking by on the street. Another story Father Skrypek tells is of a time when he and his running buddy Father Austin, returned to The Basilica from a run and discovered a group cleaning up after an event. Among the crew was “Ratso,” a community member who appeared to be volunteering in the effort. But after the cleaning was done, Ratso demanded payment for his services. Father Austin explained that there had been no arrangement for payment and that Ratso couldn’t be paid. Ratso grew angry snatched Father Austin’s keys, threw them toward the freeway and stormed off. Later, the rectory doorbell rang. A man who was sleeping under the overpass had been awakened by keys falling through the cracks and wondered if they belonged to anyone at The Basilica. Father Skrypek says that God writes straight with crooked lines. The

Hit "Liberator" was in flame and fell down on the place called "Vrabac" _Konjic district `Herzcegovina Yugoslavia' between positions german-croatian against cavalry chetnik brigade. In the airplane were 10 airmen, 5 of which were killed and others balled out by parachutes seriously burned by the inflamed airplane. From 5 alive parachuted airmen 3 landed on the german-ustashi front line and were captured by Croations, and 2 other were saved from Germans and Ustashis by myself after fighting. One of the captured B24J 460BG airmen was released after the war: he is Lt. John H. Brueckner. I brought them in my unit, took, care of them for 15 days, and when they were fit to march, I sent them to an English command, which was attached to Partizan in district Gacko (Hercegovina-Yugoslavia). These two airmen are: XI) Sgt Edward A Grube_39.571. 879-T43-44U3A_ APO 520 460th bombgr. X2) Sgt Walter Slack-14.167.196--T 42-43-USA-APO 520 460th bomb gr. All 5 killed airmen were buried on the place called Borcima, district Konjic (Hercegovina-Yugoslavia) on 28/XII/1944. I buried them together near the fallen airplane. As Communist, a month ago, shot 14 U.S.A. airmen in Kifino Selo near Nevesinje Hercegovina*Yugoslavia by the end of November 1944, it is therefore necessary to find out whether airmen Grube and Slack have reached their unit." Paul
Dickson
was
one of the
original
Minnesota
Vikings,
but
he also was
a Texan,
and proud
of both. His
Lone Star-bred
intensity
on the
defensive
line
--
"We don't play
football
any other
way in Texas,"
he said
shortly after
joining
the Vikings --
could grate
on teammates
who
had to face him
in practice.
"He
was ornery
on the field, even
in practice,"
recalled
Jim Klobuchar,
who covered
Dickson and
the Vikings for
the Minneapolis
Star in the 1960s.
"It kind
of offended the
halfbacks, who
didn't think he
should be knocking
them on their
can in practice."
"Usually,
when it's
first team against first
team, you're
not as aggressive.
But that wasn't
Paul," linebacker
Roy
Winston added.
"He upset the offensive
line like
crazy because
he went so hard
all the time." That
intensity
earned him a 13-year
NFL career,
including 10
seasons and 129
games with the Vikings
from 1961 to '70.
After his retirement,
Dickson
remained in
Minneapolis, where
he died of a blood
infection.
He was 74.
The 1969 NFL Championship Game was the 37th and
final
championship
game played
prior
to the AFL-NFL
Merger.
The winner
of the game
would go on
to play in
Super Bowl IV
against
the champion
of the American
Football
League.
The Minnesota
Vikings were
making their
first appearance
in the NFL championship
game;
their
opponent,
the Cleveland
Browns,
were making
their second
straight
appearance
and fourth in
the 1960s.
The game was played
January
4, 1970 at Metropolitan
Stadium, Bloomington,
Minnesota.
Although not as severe as the "Ice Bowl" the weather conditions were bitterly cold with a temperature of 8 degrees Fahrenheit. Cleveland LB Jim Houston suffered frostbite during the game and was hospitalized. Minnesota had gone 12–2 during the regular season,
including
a
51–3 defeat
of the Browns,
and had
defeated
the Los Angeles
Rams
in the Western
Conference
championship
a week
earlier
at Met Stadium.
The Vikings
were
coached by
Bud Grant and led
on offense
by quarterback
Joe Kapp
and WR Gene
Washington.
The defense
allowed only
133 points (9.50
per game) during
the regular
season and
was led by the
front four line
known as the Purple
People Eaters.
Cleveland had gone 10–3–1 during regular season and had defeated the Dallas Cowboys for the Eastern Conference title. The Browns were coached by Blanton Collier. Bill Nelsen was the starting quarterback and Gary Collins and Paul Warfield were star wide receivers for the team. H.M. for
